Goalie Training Tips: Stick Position at the Posts

Goalie Army Academy - Glove-Side Post PositionAlthough some goalie training providers and coaches teach goalies to use their stick, I have found that many goalies lose their ability to apply their training to game situations.  I feel that this is because although goalies may understand the “why’s”, but they’re not being provided with the proper education which allows them to understand the “when’s” and “how’s” of maximizing their coverage and efficiency at the post position.

The concept of positioning the blade of the stick in an area that’s not between their skates when in a standing position, for some, may difficult to grasp.  Because we are taking the goaltender out of their comfort zone initially, we may receive a little reluctance to adjust their game.  However, once the goalie is able to understand the multiple potential benefits, they will become more receptive to applying these techniques.
